Prepping for EK Bardic Championships

Time to plant a stake in the ground. The East Kingdom King’s and Queen’s Bardic Championships are this Saturday. At my mentor’s and my wife’s suggestion, this year I will be competing.

My goal is to make it to the final round (round 3). The first two rounds require competing bards to perform a documentably period piece (which will be my first time doing so), and a song about the Modern Middle Ages in the SCA (I’ve prepared “Lady of the Rose”), in whichever order they prefer. The third round will be their Majesties’ choice for the finalists. That part is a job interview, so I can’t control the outcome.

But regardless…consider it brung.

A day of downtime (EK A&S)

Yesterday, I had a wonderful time at the EK A&S championship. I quite enjoyed working gate, observing all the beautiful art and science on display, connecting with fellow Scadians, and not performing at all.

(Not that I don’t enjoy performing. I still very much do. Looking forward to it in 2 weeks, at the EK Bardic Championship where I will compete for the first time. But it was lovely to be part of an event in a different space and not feel any need to be “on”. I’d go so far as to speculate that others might have found that refreshing as well.) 🙂

Milestone: Finding my teacher

This news is a few weeks old, but I’ve been busy.  Still, it deserves its own post.  I am very excited.

Maistre Lucien de Pontivy, current Queen’s Bard of the East Kingdom and recently elevated to the Order of the Laurel, has taken me as a student of the Bardic Arts.

Winter Nights 2013

I am honor bound to report the results of the Winter Nights bardic competition yesterday. Sir Michael of York won the competition, and Lady Lorita de Sienna was chosen as Baronial Bard of Concordia for the coming year.

I am happy for her, and disappointed for myself. I wanted it, and I honestly had already counted the chicken and was planning out what I’d do with the eggs. The Baron said it was the toughest choice he’d had to make, and I’d made it harder by not making any mistakes.

I’ll post at some later point some of the learning I’m taking out of this. I didn’t make any mistakes…but I did make choices that were driven by wanting to win, that resulted in staying in my comfort zone with pretty much all my performances. I’m taking a look at that, and starting to see the blessing under the disguise.

Known World’s Got Talent

The SCA is sponsoring a talent competition on YouTube, since the Society has many very talented people in it.  What can I say, I entered something.

If you like it and you think I should be a finalist, you can vote for it on YouTube. You do this by “liking” the video on YouTube.

Some of you have already heard this song, but most people haven’t seen the video from the Heather Dale concert. Enjoy!

Pennsic 42 as a Budding Bard

I started this post back on Monday of War Week, but Pennsic kept happening, and on our return home, mundane life (particularly my job) pulled me right back in.  Much as I wanted to do a detailed diary of Pennsic, and/or a lengthy gratitude list, I’m going to resist the impulse because:

  1. I’ve spent time thanking the people who deserved my thanks, and will continue to do so, and
  2. As my wife points out, I did enough navel-gazing during my downtime at Pennsic to last me the rest of the year.

All New Songs from Pennsic Posted

I will post about my experiences at Pennsic when I get home. I will note that I did get several requests for lyrics and/or music to songs I performed during the war. (Bardic squee.)

As of now, all of my original pieces performed during Pennsic 42 have their lyrics posted, including “Lady of the Rose”. I will attempt to put up recordings or videos of performances the songs as soon as I can, for any who wish to perform them.

No one needs to ask my permission to perform one of my songs–there is no higher compliment a songwriter can be given. Please credit me as the author (as Drake Oranwood if you’re in the SCA)…and if you dropped me a note after you performed one for the first time, I would be delighted to hear about it (though that isn’t required).

At Pennsic 42

The family is enjoying our first taste of Peace Week (the first of the two weeks, the setup week) at Pennsic this year. We are also enjoying camping at the event instead of staying at a hotel as we have in past years. Friends have been seen (and are being made), Bardic circles have been attended, fun is being had, and the passive voice is being greatly abused.

Of my newer pieces, “Mug Your Gate” and “Tam Lin of the Elves” are both proving to be hits, and all of the older pieces are being well received. (I have yet to perform any of the others at this point.)

A note for anyone actually checking this blog (yes, you and your friend!), I’ll be part of the mini concert performance set Sunday night between 8 and 9 pm at the Performing Arts tent. And Monday morning I’m teaching my first class, “Songwriting to Tell a Story”, in AS 9. Monday afternoon brings the Bardic Exposition from 2 to 5 pm, and I’ll be performing just before 3.

Hope to see you there!

Northern Region War Camp (Award of Arms)

So I just got back from NRWC, and boy are my legs bitten. I mean, the mosquitoes were insane. But apart from that the event was fantastic.
