Norse Oddity

I wanted a tribute to David Bowie I could sing at bardic circles, like the one this coming Sunday. I don’t often filk, but sometimes, whatcha gonna do? So I reached out to the hive mind…enjoy, and feel free to make use if you feel called.

[UPDATE: I’ve filked a little more often since then.]

Norse Oddity

Lyrics by Juliean Galak and Eric Schrager
with help from the Filker and SCA Bardic Arts Facebook groups
(to the tune of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”)

Oarsman Troels to Captain Bjørn
Oarsman Troels to Captain Bjørn
Eat your salted cod and put your helmet on
Oarsman Troels to Captain Bjørn
We’ve got our oars down, let’s row on
Check the sails now, and may Thor’s luck be with you…

This is Oarsman Troels to Captain Bjørn,
We’re getting very tired
And the crew all want to know when we raise sail
Now it’s time to leave the narrows if we dare

This is Captain Bjørn to Oarsman Troels,
We’re exiting the fjord
And we’re floating in a most peculiar way
And the seas look very different today

For here am I sitting in a wood box
Far beyond the fjord
All the seas are blue
And there’s nothing I can do…

Though we’re past one hundred miles from shore,
I’m feeling very still
And I think my longship knows which way to go
Tell the Irish we are on our way–they know.

Oarsman Troels to Captain Bjørn
Your crew is dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me Captain Bjørn
Can you hear me Captain Bjørn
Can you hear me Captain Bjørn
Can you–

Here am I floating on a wood plank
Staring at the moon
All the seas are blue
And there’s nothing I can do…
