Summer Plans: Pennsic

Well, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way…let’s talk about this summer. Pennsic is less than a month away (aaaaaaaaa!), and there are a few things going on…but first, you probably wanna know about the concert, right? So let’s talk about the concert.

My “Troubadour Next Door” concert will be happening Wednesday of War Week from 7 to 8 pm (August 7), in the big Performing Arts tent, now known as The Three Crowns. (I learned last year that some people have not been there and don’t know where it is. This is not the PA Rehearsal Tent. This is the giant yellow tent at the heart of Pennsic University, behind Aethelmearc Royal). PLEASE NOTE the 7 pm time slot, earlier than usual. However, I’m okay with it because I am opening for Heather Dale, whose concert is at 8 pm, which means there should be some solid turnout.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way…we’re going to be at Pennsic both weeks, leaving site late Thursday of War Week. If you want to say hi, we camp at McGuire’s Marauders, N06, next to Ansteorra Royal.

Some specific places you will definitely be able to find me:

  • Thursday of Peace Week, 1 August, 9 pm to midnight – McGuire’s Marauders will be hosting our traditional Chocolate Bardic night, and I will continue as our primary master of ceremonies. It continues to go strong, and it’s gratifying to be able to create this special space.
  • Middle Sunday, 4 August, around midday – We will be honoring the memory of our late campmaster, Master John McGuire, as we serve our traditional fresh Sunday scones. John is a loss that is felt Society wide.

War Week:

  • Monday, 5 August, 12 to 1:30 pm – I will be teaching my new “The Pleasures and Perils of Making Filk” class for the first time in person, at the A&S 9 tent in Pennsic University. (Yes, I’m doubling down on being a troublemaker. Come at me.)
  • Wednesday, 7 August, 1 to 2:30 pm – I will be teaching my new “Developing Stage Presence” class (also for the first time in person), at A&S 9.
  • And now once again: Wednesday, 7 August, 7 to 8 pm – My “Troubadour Next Door” concert, at the Performing Arts Tent inside of Pennsic U, leading off for Heather Dale.

Opening for Marian of Heatherdale is an incredible privilege, and as always, I will work to bring my best. This year I’m going stripped down and simple, basically just me on stage singing my heart out. I will be showcasing more of my older pieces from Hidden Gold than I’ve been performing in recent years. (Next year, when it will be finished, dammit, I will devote more attention to the newer songs that will be available on Hold the Door Open. More on that in a future post.)

I should have a little more time to relax and see people this year. I really need the connection, so please don’t be afraid to reach out.

Hope to see you there.
