Carpe Diem

This filk was written to honor SCA volunteers who offer service. I’ve learned from my friends who do service that it is often a war between joy and regret…and I’m grateful that joy wins most of the time.

Carpe Diem

by Eric Schrager (aka Drake Oranwood)
(To the tune of “Mamma Mia” by ABBA)

I’ve been getting burned out, here in my local group.
So I made up my mind, really must fly the coop.
But there’s a need—will I ever learn?
Service by deed—and I suddenly lose control
When I already have three roles…

Just one word and I lose all my command…
You say you need just one more pair of hands…
Whoa-oh

Carpe diem! Here I go again.
My my, why’d I put my hand up?
Carpe diem! Got that glow again.
My my, swear I never plan ta.

Yes, I must be demented!
Look what that last event did
To me—please don’t laugh, I volunteered!
Carpe diem! Guess I’ll never know
Why, why do I have to volunteer?

I can’t count all the times that I’ve said “it’s enough!”
I’m frustrated and sad—you keep calling my bluff…
Each time I go, when I shut the door,
I think you know that I’m not gonna last a week,
Can’t say no to my band of geeks…

Just one word and I lose all my command…
You say you need just one more pair of hands…
Whoa-oh

Carpe diem! Here I go again.
My my, why’d I put my hand up?
Carpe diem! Got that glow again.
My my, swear I never plan ta.

Yes, I must be demented!
Look what that last event did
To me—please don’t laugh, I volunteered!

Carpe diem! Even if I say
“Bye bye, this time I’m retiring!”
Carpe diem! That’s the game I play.
Just say, “Oh, you’re so inspiring!”

Carpe diem! Here I go again.
My my, why’d I put my hand up?
Carpe diem! Got that glow again.
My my, swear I never plan ta.

Yes, I must be demented!
Look what that last event did
To me—please don’t laugh, I volunteered!
Carpe diem! Guess I’ll never know
Why, why do I have to volunteer?
